Reports in England claim Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has his eyes on Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany. The French manager is willing to allow Alexis Sanchez leave if he gets the Belgian in return.
Sanchez has not hidden his intention to leave the Emirates Stadium and there are rumours that Pep Guardiola could come for him in January. Wenger vehemently refused to allow the Chilean leave over the summer despite the strong interest from Etihad and the player’s insistence on exiting the team.
With the winter window set to open in two weeks, Guardiola could get Sanchez as Wenger’s stance is believed to have softened. However, City is doing very well and they seem to have the forward’s position covered. Instead of getting the player expensively now, they could wait until the summer and get him virtually for free.
Reports in some quarters say Wenger would ask for player exchange now instead of cash. He initially wanted England forward Raheem Sterling but with the former Liverpool man deepening his importance in the City squad, Wenger wants Kompany. Wenger wanted Sterling plus cash but Guardiola refused. Then Arsenal sought for a capable replacement in Thomas Lemar but the French player hesitated on the Arsenal move.
After several injuries to defenders, Wenger is willing to add Kompany. There are even reported moves for the out of favour David Luiz from Chelsea. Kompany has suffered several injuries of late but Wenger rates him so he wants him to move to north London. Per Mertesacker is set to hang up his boots so Kompany would have a stable role in the team while Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac can play in their best role. Wenger needs to get his team right for the second half of the season else he would end trophyless again and miss Champions League qualification.
